The Name Change

So, many of you were asking why we changed baby's name from Berynger to Jackson.

Well, we originally wanted to name him Bear. After we had decided that Bear was the name, we had a few people confront us (and not in a very friendly way) about how wrong it was to name him Bear, all because of the color of his skin. So after that we decided that we would name him Berynger (because it means courageous as a bear) and then we'd just call him Bear as a nickname. We named him Berynger so that we could defend ourselves if anyone else got on our backs about naming a black child Bear. So, you see, Berynger was never the name we REALLY wanted for him. After being home for two months and NEVER once calling him Berynger we decided that it was wrong to give him a name just for defense purposes. Plus, no one could figure out how to spell it or how to say it. I don't want him to have to deal with that for the rest of his life. And anyway, Bear was always just a nickname, and we can call him that no matter what his formal name is.

Plus, he just looks like a Jackson!

I think that's a great reason! He DOES look like a Jackson; it fits him well!

Isn't it frustrating to have to defend ourselves!! Bear is a cute name for him as is Jackson. I think sometimes people can be too sensitive. My mom bought my boys each a Davy Crockett hat. My one family member was upset because of a mean name some Black people were called early on in American history, which just happened to be what the hat was. I had no clue of this nor would I ever call E the name. When we were in Uganda, Holt's partners there were assisting us and escorting us everywhere. The one lady called E a monkey. Another pet name that some consider offensive. But it came from an African and I don't think she meant any harm of it. Totally goofy!

Our son knows his name but answers most of the time to Bubble:)

LOL, well - I love it. So is it a hardship to change the paperwork or anything? What about all the cute things you bought with his name on it? LOL I'm just a worry wort! LOL Is his middlename the same? Just FYI- Jackson is very lucky to have such wonderful, caring parents who are looking out for his best interests.

Shari!

Actually, his name is still technically Abebe. As far as I know, the name change paperwork is not done until we do the readoption, but I'm not really sure. :) Not being able to use all the monogrammed stuff I bought totally sucks, but that wasn't a good enough reason to keep a name I never really liked! And yes, his middle name will stay the same!
